Its beautiful green color is created by a combination of trace elements vanadium, chromium, and iron. Varying levels of each dictate the intensity of green color and the warm florescence that the finest emeralds are know for. At a 7.5-8 on the Mohs hardness scale, emeralds are an excellent choice for use in jewelry. Emeralds high demand and rarity has made a way for it to be traditionally acceptable to be treated with oil.
